Phunky Flavas – every other Sunday 4pm

lee

Lee, aka phunkyflavas takes his name from the acid jazz and funk night that he ran and played at in Britain’s most easterly club for most of the 90s. Inspired by the beats and basslines of hip hop in the 80s, Lee went after the samples and original artists….like everybody did! For Lee the sounds of Curtis Mayfield and Fred Wesley merged with the Brand New Heavies, Corduroy and JTQ and morphed into a love of Afrobeat, Library, World and Latin grooves.

You know the drill, career, family and keeping that mossy stuff out of the brickweave all put paid to the plan of becoming a superstar DJ, until in lockdown and with too much time on his hands, Lee invested in a pair of turntables and got his records into some sort of order.

So now, and with grateful thanks to all at Soul Roots Radio, Lee brings you ‘phunkyflavas’ – playing every 2 weeks on a Sunday afternoon from 4pm, all on lovely little 45s and big ole 12 inch records.
